I am addicted enough to sloping (not to mention young kids = take the money and run when an opportunity to be excused from family duties arises) that I want a glider for the light days. I don't (yet) have the skills to manage some high performance wing (at least not when using PicaSim , which is a FANTASTIC piece of free or nearly free soaring simulation software).

Broad categories:

-Discus Launch

-Old school floater, like gentle lady/olympic 2 + maybe add some ailerons.

-Dont know what this category is: windrider birdie

Any thoughts ideas on what category and/or specific glider to get would be much appreciated. My building experience is limited, but I do enjoy it.

Visiting my son who lives in Halswell, Christchurch between Jan 4th till Feb 13, I live in England. I am thinking of bringing over two models a Shwing and a Mini Vec. Would these be suitable for the slopes and wind available at that time of year. I believe people fly near Taylor's Mistake, can you get anywhere near the flying areas by car or do I need to bring my glider carrying backpack. I have walked around from the beach to the head but it was quite a walk with a glider.

Any info would be much appreciated, my son flies quads and power

Went out to Rags today, Boxing Day, expecting light winds but it was blowing a little stronger at around 10-15 kts straight in. A couple of Penters and a couple of HG's were enjoying the classic conditions.

I got there about 2.45 and soon had the MAXA in the air whilst Judith and Michelle walked down to the beach. I decided to walk down whilst flying and see how the new machine liked the dunes. Superbly easy to catch with full crow braking into the breeze and gliding into wind down the sand towards the water with barely a degree or two of incline she continued to remain aloft at about 2m height.

A hand toss into wind then turning back towards the dunes saw her quickly gain height once reaching the 3m dunes. Then she would climb easily to 100 ft before turning back to the main slope....up...and away again to max out at several hundred feet. Braking with crow and she comes down vertically at about 45 degrees nose down, easy to catch. Another toss... and away again. No probs all afternoon.

A great machine and at least as good as the Supra although a little heavier due to the increased span...about 5 ounces heavier from memory.

We had a couple of days satying at Port Waikato recently so I took the opportunity to drive up to Kariotahi Beach to try out the slope. Once there, it took me a while to discover how to drive to the top of the ridge, up behind Castaways resort. The management were very helpful allowing me access through the complex and up to the top gate. I parked there and walked the 15 minutes to the hang gliding launch site but this track could easily be driven on by car, in dry conditions.

Just before the flying site is a small clearing which appeared to have been used as a camp area.

The flying site is fairly small but adequate for landings, just. The site over looks the ocean facing almost due west and is approximately 300 ft above the beach. Hang gliding and paragliding is awesome from here with many kilometres of high cliffs in both directions.

RC Soaring is superb from this spot and would make a nice day out for a couple of carloads of guys if you want a change of scenery. However, you would not want to loose a model over the front, as it would be extremely difficult to retrieve due to the ruggedness of the cliffs and density of scrub. Much more difficult than Raglan.

I had just completed repairs to the Cobra and was keen to test her out again. Breeze was moderate at about 12 knots but the lift was very good. I had time for only a short flight which was pretty exciting given the location. Tried some tight ele turns to confirm the wing repair was up to it. Landing was not text book and I was glad Darryl was not there videoing this as I flipped the model upside down, but fortunately ended up on some long soft grass. I was happy that the Cob flew just as well as ever and as strong too.

The view looking to the South shows where Port Waikato is, which is just to the left of the point in the distance. Its only a few kms in a straight line but takes 55 minutes by car from Port Waikato.

I also had a nice time dune soaring back at Port Waikato with the Bubble Dancer off some nice high 40-60 ft sand dunes.

Must go back the Kariotahi sometime soon.

Yesterday (Wed) I drove out to Rags to test out the 4metre Fox after repairing her recently. Wind was excellent at around 27-30 knots and SW, but too strong for me to launch her on my own. I had a mate with me but he was only able to hold the Tx for me whilst I attempted to launch the model.

The first attempt resulted in the wind flipping her over backwards before I had time to even point her into the wind, a couple of minor cracks in the fuse underside but nothing to weaken her. The second attempt and I managed to get her away, just, but due to the strong wind I was unable to achieve a run up, the wind just too strong to hold the wings level without a helper and she ended up in the gorse, just like last February  .

The third time and the wind blew me and the Fox over backwards, I landed on my bum still holding onto the model trying not to bash it on the ground.

I tried again but could not hold her steady in the wind so gave up rather defeated, but with and intact model.

Phew ! I was so determined to get her into the big air but it wasn't to be. Will try again soon, with m ore help next time.

I am a beginner, clocking up enough crashes to occasionally make some miraculous saves. I LOVE slope soaring, and I love my fusion. Only thing is that because I have spent more time in a cockpit than behind a transmitter, I struggle with the lack of a rudder, particularly on days with less wind, where too much bank looses a lot of altitude.

Has anyone modified their fusion to have individual servos for each ruddervator? If so, where did you place the additional servo, what size servo(s) did you use and where did you route the extra linkage/rod?

Thanks.
