There are many slopes in the hills around Blenheim that cover all wind directions with NW being the predominant direction.

Wither Hills Farm Park directly behind Blenheim has a few different spots, though all require some walking to access. The whole area of the Farm Park is public access so there is no problem with access at any stage or in any area of the Farm Park.

The best in the Farm Park are accessed off Cob Cottage Rd (head Sth on SH1) - drive to the end of the public access, park and follow the continuation of the road through the vineyard to the point above the vineyard. This site can be DSed in both a NW and an E though the NW is by far the best. The LZ isn't particularly great but I have flown glass planes here quite a bit. Winds covered are W - E with NW/N being the best. Further up the hill is another site that covers the NW/E and is great DSing.

41°32'13.62"S 173°59'28.75"E

There are many other sites in the Farm Park that just take a little exploring on foot or google maps to find with the slope at the highest point next to the lookout being one excellent example - but requires a stiff 45min walk to get there!

Heading further south on SH1 comes to the Dashwood Pass. The hill directly above the pass has an excellent slope for NW/S/SE with an ok LZ. This is private property but access can be obtained by visiting the farm on the RHS at the bottom of the pass when driving south - a white farm house set back from the road near the pine plantation.

41°35'39.39"S 174° 2'49.02"E

In Seddon there is the Star Hill readily seen from SH1 while driving south. Access is obtained from the property called Star Hill at the base of the hill off Marama Rd in Seddon. This faces N/NW and possibly S (though I've never flown the S side) and has a superb LZ which is huge and very laminar though there is a power line that runs through to one side. Excellent slope and can be accessed by high clearance cars/4wds through the dry months and 4wd year round.

41°41'17.61"S 174° 3'3.87"E

Cable Bay is a nice little spot on the way to Nelson.

It has some great sloping for West winds (landind a challenge though) and East up the bay as well. Landing is easy for this direction.

The public have access to this area for the view but it is closed for the lambing season. Check with the caravan park below the site to see if is is open.

French Pass is located in the Morlborough Sounds and is on all road maps. I have included a google earth view of the road to the pass, but have not shown any of the flying sites due to there being lots and lots for all wind directions. It is a fair way out so a full day is needed.

This is a must do if you are doing a road trip. The Nelson club have a trip up here once a year.
