I have a Graupner Cirrus Clone 3m which has a glass fuse (pretty heavy one) of unknown manufacture. It had some balsa skinned white foam core wings which sadly died in a launching accident. So i have a new set of cores and some balsa sheeting for the replacement wings.

The old wings never had spoilers, and it sorely needed them due to its wing-loading. So, i want to add them to the new wing set. Before i sheet the new, i know i need to run a channel for the wires, but i want to garner some opinion on spoiler options, placement, and wing strength etc.

Now, i want to be able to do points landings with this, so the spoilers need to be pretty effective. It will never see a winch launch, just hand-tows and shock-cord bungee launches. The wing will be built with two tapering sub-spars about 1/3 length of each wing which keep in contact with the bottom skin. These will also house the brass joiner tubes. The sheeting (1.5mm balsa) will be continous 1.2m out from root, then a seperate sheet to finish off the last 30cm.

The old wings were layed out as above, and are plenty strong enough for the launches i gave it. So, this thread isnt really a how to make the wing stronger thread, rather about spoilers and the cons of adding them from a strength point of view.

So, im open to ideas about how and when in the build to add the spoiler bays. And also to the sizing and placement of the spoilers - pros/cons. My initial thought is to have a long and low spoiler which deflects 90 degrees made from TE stock (3/4" - 22mm or so) and about 20cm in length. Placement would be perhaps a bit less than 1/3 the way out so that the sub-spars add to strengthen the weakening caused by the opening in the top surface. I was just going to cut out an opening from the top (but not through the bottom skin) to house the servo and spoiler as deep as it needs to be. I could line the bay with balsa or ply glued against the foam sides perhaps to transfer load to the bottom skin? Or would that not acheive much? Or perhaps lay up some glass under the balsa in the area i will cut out the bay??

The wing will be 24mm thick (at thickest point) and 220mm cord and is a S3021 (IIRC) @ 11.5% (IIRC). The spoiler will be positioned about 20-30mm back from the thickest point of the section. Does that sound ok, or should it go further back? or forward?

Thoughts, ideas? Help?? I want to get it properly sorted before the skins go on.

Where can you buy Monokote from these days?? I used to be able to get it from Airsail, but no longer. Prefer to buy from within NZ if possible.

I know where i can get oracover and solarfilm and solite, and all the others, but not Monokote. I would strongly prefer monokote. Anyone?

There was an auction on trademe a few weeks back for an original airtronics olympic II 100" sailplane. I added it to my watchlist but didnt get it. It went to someone else. Funny thing is that now i got an offer to buy it for $100. Im kind of tempted, but have too much stuff on my plate to start another woodie build.

So, i'll throw out a request for qoutes for one of you expert builders to build it for me - without radio gear, but with servos. It want it to have the spoilers option, built standard. Quote to include doing a fully sheeted balsa d-box and covering in monokote.

Any takers?

PS the offer is only (trademe) valid for the next 3 days, and will only accept the trademe offer to buy the kit, if someone wants to do the build.

Andrew contacted me a few days ago about building one of his new models for him.

Its the Big Bird DS Carbon version from Soaring USA; http://www.soaringusa.com/products/prod ... g=big+bird

It will be interesting as its a bit smaller than what I normally build so my fingers have been on a diet

Might take a bit longer than normal as it is complicated by needing to do a 2.4GHz install (there is a LOT of carbon in it). He has a 9300 carbon fuse receiver, and have an additional carbon fuse satellite receiver coming for 4 total antennas.

Servos are Hitec HS125's in the wing and a HS5085 for the elevator and rudder.

I wont be starting on it for a week or so as I want to finish Marks M60 fuse first and need to order in a couple of small bits'n'pieces.

No wiring harness came with it so will be making one up from scratch. I hope to be able to document each step so you can all see whats involved and how to assemble a moulded model but we'll see how often the camera remembers to come out.

Les, you got Fiber tape? If you don't I can Courier you some with my parcel tomorrow....let me know...

Also...I will send you x4 AAA battery pack, 2.4 gz receiver, switch....for install. The switch is a little big, its a new JR one. If you are adept at making quality DC Switchjacks, I would pay a wee bit extra for one. By quality, I mean metal plugs - not Jaycar style plastic ones. I have used these before and they break...up to you where you install plug.

Happy to now make it $60 - now including install of battery, rx and switch (mine)

This new fuse is a little longer than the original M60 fuse. A quick balance with the wing slid in shows the CG will need a wee bit of lead in the nose( not much though) - if the battery pack is sitting forward in the slot provided.

The wing will be removable...not sure how to afix it in yet....the wires for the servos exit at the LE of the wing - right in the centre. So there will need to be a small hole in the LE recess in the fuse entering into the rx compartment for the servo wires (with universal plugs) to go thru.

Post any questions etc here....

Cheers Les, can't wait to fly her again!
